Monster Hunt

My phone rings, cutting off the hissing whispers of doom. Whipping it out of my back pocket, the bright glow of the screen floods the hallway.

I swipe the answer button and press it against my ear. “Why didn’t you tell me this place was haunted?”

Kellen’s voice comes across way too calm. “I did. It’s not my fault you’re so completely oblivious.”

“You could have tried harder! I’m on my way back out.” Hanging up, I use the phone’s light, I spin in a tight circle before I figure out which direction leads back to the entrance.

The skitter of claws rush past me, followed by the dry slither of scales through dust. This haunter likes to rely heavily on the creepy crawly fear.

When I grab the door handle and twist, it won’t budge. What that...?

Spindling out a line of power, I add strength and give it a hard twist. The knob comes off in my hand, but the door stays firmly shut.

Frustrated, I kick the damn thing. “I don’t have time for this shit!”

In my hand, my phone rings.

I snap it back to my ear. “You knew this would happen.”

“You wanted someplace cheap where your imps didn’t have to bunk together,” Kellen reminds me. “I offered another solution multiple times.”

“Why haven’t you had this place exorcised?” Something with more than eight legs drops onto my shoulder, and I swat it away.

“You think I keep a coven of witches on speed dial or something?”

Yes. I bite my tongue before the word escapes. Kellen owns Tally’s men in some way, but I’m not sure I’m supposed to know about Slater and Xander’s iffy skills.

I rest my forehead against the door. “Just tell me how to get out of here.”

“Once it’s triggered, you have to go all the way to the basement and defeat the nightmare.”

“This really is a fucking horror movie.” I pound my head against the door. Thump, thump, thump. An answering thud comes from the stairs, uneven as if the person hobbles on a stump for one leg. Sighing, I ask, “How do I defeat the nightmare?”

“Sunlight.”

A wicked cackle fills the room, and I cover one ear. “In the basement?”

“There’s a mirror system you have to rig up. Shouldn’t take you more than an hour.”

“Fuck my life.”

“Take your time and check out the rest of the house before you go downstairs,” he suggests. “See if you like the place.”

“Yeah, I guess.” I straighten and turn back toward the dark house. “How’s the roof on this place?”

“Solid.”

I start toward the stairs. “And the bedrooms?”

“They’re decent size. One master and five standard.”

The first step creaks ominously under my foot, but the wood feels solid enough. Hard to say if it’s construction or part of the haunt. Just to be safe, I put the phone on speaker and angle the flashlight down to see each step before I put my weight on it.

“How many bathrooms?”

“Two upstairs and a powder room on the ground floor.”

“Seriously? In a house this size?” A shadow flitters past. It holds the shape of wings and claws designed for rending flesh.
